A series of increasingly colder storms will bring first rain and then snow to the Tahoe Basin over the next five days.
The first is moving into the Sierra this morning and will bring rain and snow mostly to areas north of Interstate 80. We’re going to see some cloud cover and some high winds but only a few sprinkles or a light drizzle. No snow though. Snow levels should be above 8500 feet.
A colder system moves in Saturday, a piece of energy splitting off from a low pressure area in the Gulf of Alaska. This will push the jet stream south and bring a bit of moisture in with the cold air.
Snow levels will probably start out Saturday around 7000 feet before dropping overnight to about 6000 feet, maybe a little lower, by Sunday morning. It’s not a big storm, but it looks capable of bringing 6 to 10 inches of new snow to the Tahoe peaks above 7000 feet, with a few inches possible at lake level on Sunday.
After a lull on Monday, the coldest of the three storms is on track for a Tuesday arrival. It’s still too soon to dial in the amounts, but this one has the potential to deliver significant accumulations to the Tahoe Basin, depending on how quickly it moves through. Snow levels are likely to drop to below 4000 feet by the time the cold front exits on Wednesday. We should have a better fix on potential snow totals in the next day or two.
